About us

Who we are. What we do.

The purpose of the African Graduate Student Association is to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for graduate students of African descent at Carnegie Mellon University.

Through social, cultural, and professional development events throughout the academic year, we aim to enable our members to become advocates on issues pertaining to development in Africa.

Our hope is to engage with the CMU community through our events to create awareness of the cultural and socio-economic riches of the African Continent.

Specifically, our organization aims to:

  • To provide social and leadership opportunities for members of our organization.
  • To provide academic and social support for members of our organization and other African students at Carnegie Mellon University.
  • To empower our members to advocate for issues faced by Africans both on the African continent and in the diaspora.
  • To enhance public understanding of educational, political, social, and economic issues that the African community faces.
